  1. The alphabet is a set of conventional symbols
  2. used for writing, based on a correlation 
  3. between individual symbols and spoken sounds,
  4. so called from alpha (a) and beta (b), the
  5. names of the first two letters of the 
  6. classical Greek alphabet. The earliest known 
  7. alphabet is from Palestine, from about the 
  8. year 1700 BC. Each letter of the alphabets 
  9. descended from Greek represents a particular
  10. sound or sounds, usually grouped into 
  11. vowels (a, e, i, o, u, in the English version
  12. of the Roman alphabet), consonants (b, p, d, 
  13. t, and so on) and semivowels (w, y).
